Apple unibody MacBook Pro

Just swapped into the new 15″ MacBook Pro today and I have a ton of good things to say about it, plus two not-so-very good things to say about it.

First, a pic:

So, I’ll start with the good points:

1 – Speed – Even with the older 2.53GHz Intel part and 4 GB of RAM, this thing blows away my previous 15″ Pro with the 2.33GHz chip.

2 – Fit and Finish – The aluminum unibody is awesome.  There have been reviews of this thing out for a year that say the same, but I felt the need to express just how sturdy and tight this chassis is.  The single-milled piece of aluminum is perfect.

3 – Migration – Not so much machine dependent, but the migration assistant in OS X 10.5.7 really is the best. Of the plain silly number of apps I had installed on the old Pro, only VMWare Fusion and Cisco’s IPSec VPN client gave me issues… and in each case it just took a quick reinstall of the latest binary to clear up any problems.

And now, the annoying parts:

1 – Screen – I really do *HATE* the glossy screen with a passion.  If I had a choice, I’d go back to matte. The glare is awful.

2 – Keyboard – The chiclet keyboard is taking a lot of getting used to.  I though it wouldn’t be so bad, but it’s kinda proven to be a pain.

Overall, I’m very happy.  I’ll continue to post any thing interesting about the machine as I start using it full time.

Migrating to the iPhone 3GS

I think most people can figure out how to migrate all of their existing data off of their old iPhone onto their new 3GS… but for those of you who are braindead can’t figure it out, here are the basic steps:

  1. Sync your old phone with iTunes – This will create a backup of everything on your phone (call history, email and account settings, SMS messages, etc…).
  2. Plug in your new iPhone and register it with your iTunes account.
  3. Perform a restore (instead of registering the new phone as a new iPhone with iTunes).
  4. Call the 800 number (actually I think it’s a 888 number) supplied with the phone for AT&T activation. Your new 3GS probably came with it’s own SIM card, so you don’t need to remove it from the old phone and insert it in the new one. Once your account has been activated with AT&T, you should be all set.

One problem I noticed was that the UrbanSpoon app on the old phone didn’t come over to the new one by doing the sync/restore in iTunes even though the old phone was set to sync apps. Maybe it was just a fluke.

Search Just Isn’t Search Without Google

Maybe I am “search impaired” when browsing websites other than Google, but I really had to dig to find the below page on Apple’s website:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109

If you need the basic steps for migrating from a first-gen iPhone into a 3G or 3GS, that’s the link you’re going to want. There’s not much technical info on the page, but it gives a decent overview of what you need to do.
