Computer stuff for fun and profit

I ran into an issue today that I thought I should document here just in case I can’t remember how to repair it again. ‘Repair’ is the operative word here, since this is a trick I discovered to repair an issue in Microsoft Office 2010 on Windows 7 (and probably Vista and maybe XP, too).

Office 2010 will get screwy with some of the linked shortcuts installed by default in the start menu. This is a givin.  Just accept it and move on. Most notably, Word and Powerpoint lose their custom icons. Even manually launching winword.exe rewards the you with a usable Word window, but the program icon representing the application in the taskbar is the generic Windows executable icon, not the custom Word icon you’re used to seeing. Additionally, some of the other applets included in the Office tools folder are also missing their custom icons.

There are two ways to fix this: 1 – completely uninstall and re-install Office (yea, right), or 2 – do the following:

At a command prompt as an Administrator, type ‘winword.exe /r’ and press enter.

That one little command will fix a surprising amount of stuff. Give it a try… it sure beats removing Office completely.

Happy Birthday, Daniel.  You’re two and I’m in disbelief at how quickly time flies.

You did seem to enjoy the Tonka car set you opened this morning… see below ;-)

Linux Virtual Machine Migration

When moving a Linux virtual machine from one host to another (or, possibly just adding a replacement NIC PCI card in a physical Linux machine), you may find that eth0 no longer exists.  This happens because Linux knows that the previous mac address used by eth0 is no longer there.

To fix this, you need to edit the persistence rule that maps eth0 to a specific mac.

1 – cd into the following:  /etc/udev/rules.d/  [cd /etc/udev/rules.d/ ]

2 – edit the contents of: 70-persistent-net.rules [ sudo pico 70-persistent-net.rules ]

3 – find the entry that has NAME=”eth0″ in it. Make sure the “ATTR{address}==” attribute matches the mac address that should be associated with eth0.

4 – save the file

5 – reboot

The other option would be changing the mac address manually on the VM setup, but I’ve found that can cause some hypervisors (ahem, ESXi) to be pissy about the vendor ID portion of the address. With the above solution, you only need to fix the mapping from eth0 and you’re good to go.

-scriptPath, your name is not -scriptPath

Another quick post so that I remember the following:

When running a dsmod on Active Directory to change a user’s (or group of users’) logon script value, the AD attribute may be saved as “scriptPath”, but you *DO NOT* reference it in your dsmod command as “-sciptPath”. Microsoft decided to call it: -loscr

Again, use “-loscr” in the dsmod command.

I don’t know why, but I don’t seem to be able to remember this little tidbit, so I’m putting it here for future reference. That is all… carry on.

I’m making a rare post so as to hold onto this link:

http://www.google.com/dirhp

It’s Google web indexing broken out by category (a la the way the Yahoo front page used to look years ago). I found it quite interesting and found a bunch of sites that I’d have never thought to search through before.  Check it out.

We had a chance to spend some time at the Great Escape with my Mother-In-Law’s company picnic on Sunday the 13th. Needless to say, Samantha thoroughly enjoyed herself and I think Daniel had a pretty good time, too. Below are some photos from throughout the day and a couple videos.

Relaxing on Memorial Day Weekend

Just a quick shot of Daniel and Great Papa up at camp in Galway… I think they’re having a good time relaxing.

And Daniel sure likes watermelon. To be fully truthful, he just plain likes food.

Sitting and eating... pretty typical for Daniel

Happy Birthday, Daniel!

Since I apparently stink at doing anything in a timely fashion, this is a few days late. On the plus side, Daniel is now one year old, so at least he has no idea that I’m late.

He’s almost fully walking, trying to make with the words and generally getting into everything. Just about right ;-)

Here are some pics from his little party we had for the family this past weekend:
